West Virginia Mountaineers Football Details

The West Virginia Mountaineers are on of the Big 12’s newest members that are still looking to make a splash in the conference and winning the Big 12 title for football. The Big 12 is a tough conference, but West Virginia seems to be holding their own but still hasn’t come through when it matters to take the title. With a decent record of 8-5 last season, West Virginia looks to improve in the new 2016 campaign.

As the game of college football began to evolve, the West Virginia Mountaineers have roots tracing back to 1891. The Mountaineers had early success throughout the 1900’s-1910’s but didn’t remain consistent with that success until the 1920’s. The 1920’s brought a lot of success for the program under head coaches Clarence Spears and Ira Rodgers which included an undefeated season in 1922, the Mountaineers’ first bowl game appearance, victories over rivals like Pitt and Gonzaga, and All American players. The success and winning continued throughout the years and West Virginia had established itself as a great college football program which included Southern Conference Championships in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1958 under head coach Art Lewis. But as many programs have, there were also down years of the program and mediocre seasons. West Virginia struggled a lot during the 1970’s as they had a few decent seasons but couldn’t remain consistent.

Things began to turn around in the 1980’s under head coach Don Nehlen. Under Nehlen, the Mountaineers were 149-93 with 13 bowl game appearances. Nehlen had his good and bad seasons but really helped West Virginia transition into the Big East Conference and his 149 wins are the most in the school’s history. The next head coach to take over was current Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez. Under Rodriguez, West Virginia had a lot of success going 60-26 from 2001-2007. Rodriguez led West Virginia to 6 bowl game, 2 bowl game wins, and 4 Big East Conference titles. Rodriguez was also a two time Big East Coach of the Year winner before leaving to take the job with the Michigan Wolverines. West Virginia would see another coach in Bill Stewart from 2007-2010 and going 28-12 before hiring current head coach Dana Holgorsen. Under coach Holgorsen, the Mountaineers are 36-28 and have 4 bowl game appearances with 2 bowl game wins. The record of the Mountaineers while in the Big 12 hasn’t been the best but continues to improve as they are establishing themselves as a competitive program in one of college football’s best conferences. The Mountaineers are continually improving and may soon be a great team in the Big 12.

Through the rich history of the West Virginia Mountaineer program there has been many great players that have played for the Mountaineers. Some of the best West Virginia Mountaineers are: Steve Slaton, Major Harris, Pat White, Pat McAfee, Adam Jones, Will Clarke, Geno Smith, Marc Bulger, Tavon Austin, Kevin White, Oliver Luck, Stedman Bailey, Bruce Irvin, and many more. As the team continues to improve, the Mountaineers will always get great players coming into their program.

The continual improvement of the West Virginia Mountaineers is something to pay close attention to as they continue to compete for the top spot in the Big 12. The Mountaineers may not be in the front of everyone’s mind as one of the best teams in the country or even the Big 12, but they’ll continue to fight to be the best team in the country that can compete against anyone.
