What makes MTS Centre special?

The MTS Centre opened in 2004 and was in use before the Winnipeg Jets moved back from Atlanta. It is the fourth newest arena in the entire NHL only behind the Barclays Center, Consol Energy Center, and the Prudential Center. Even though it is the fourth newest arena, it actually has the smallest capacity with or without standing room across the league. This provides for a very intimate ice hockey experience. Even though the arena is thought to be too small for the NHL’s standards, it has many modern amenities and upgrades that make it stand out from many of the other arenas around the league.

Who are some marquee players that have been apart of the Winnipeg Jets team in the past?

Before the Winnipeg Jets moved back to Winnipeg in 2011, they were the Atlanta Thrashers from 1999 until 2011. Before this move back to Winnipeg, another "Winnipeg Jets" existed from 1972 to 1996 but after the 1996 season was subsequently moved to Arizona to become the Phoenix Coyotes. Through the Jets’ history they have fielded some great players including Ilya Kovalchuk, Marian Hossa, Vyacheslav Kozlov, Bryan Little, and Evander Kane among others.

How have the Winnipeg Jets performed historically?

Due to their short history in the NHL, the Winnipeg Jets have never made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, nor do they have any accolades to speak of. It is interesting because not only has this Winnipeg Jets team, previously the Atlanta Thrashers, not made it to a Stanley Cup Final, but the original Winnipeg Jets, now known as the Phoenix Coyotes, have never made it to the Stanley Cup Final either!

Winnipeg Jets Overview

Winnipeg Jets Franchise History

The Winnipeg Jets are extremely new to the professional hockey ranks, but even as a fresh club onto the scene, the franchise hasn't always been located in Winnipeg or known as the Jets. That's right, although the organization has only been around since 1999, the Jets were the artists formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers. After much speculation in 2011 that another team would indeed be coming to Canada, the Jets came to life and started their journey towards hockey dominance.

The Thrashers skated onto the ice in hopes of fulfilling their hopes and dreams back near the turn of the century, but events didn't turn out so well for these ice hopefuls as Atlanta was downright awful in its first campaign on the ice. The squad was only able to muster up a ridiculously low 39 points on the campaign, which still stands as the worst season in Thrashers or Jets history. Things would get much better for the crew the following year with a 21-point increase, but the playoffs still continued to be a pipe dream for the NHL's newest organization.

Atlanta would officially break the 70-point plateau with 74 when the 2003 came around, so at least the franchise was on the upswing from that perspective. The upward trajectory kept trucking on the next year, and then after the lockout seemed to suck all the momentum out of every team in the league, the Thrashers made sure everyone knew that was not the case and brought the fire on a nightly basis to rack up 90 points the year after the inexcusable lockout.

But then came the fun part for Thrashers supporters, as not only did the squad break a franchise record with a whopping 97 points on the campaign, but they also sniffed the playoffs after taking the Southeast division crown. Would the stingy New York Rangers be able to slow down these determined Thrashers? You bet they would, as the Rangers brought out the brooms and swept Atlanta right on out of the playoffs in swift fashion.

The Thrashers would see things go backwards after that and not experience the playoffs even a single time before heading to the north to officially land in Winnipeg. And even the name switch to the Jets would bring much playoff experience to the squad, with the franchise only finding a way to sneak into the post-season just once since the bold move was made to Canada.

Winnipeg Jets Marquee Players

There's only so much that Winnipeg can do with a short 16 year history in the best hockey league in the world, so it's not like the Thrashers/Jets have created many Hall of Fame legends at this point in their young franchise.

But one phenomenal hockey player has stood above the rest during the organization's history, and that incredible talent is Ilya Kovalchuk. The man takes top honors for the club in the most important statistical categories – points, goals, and total assists – so there's no doubt that he deserves a lot of credit as one of the premier talents to roll through the franchise.

Vyacheslav Kozlov also deserves some mention, as does the current Jets member Bryan Little, who is quickly making his way up the ladder in those significant statistical categories as well.

Winnipeg Jets Conference and Stanley Cup Titles

It's probably a bit obvious at this point in time that the Thrashers/Jets don't have a ton of of playoff history to speak of since their inception.

With that in mind, it's also probably quite obvious that the Jets don't have any conference titles or Stanley Cup triumphs to their resume quite yet. In fact, even a single playoff win would be nice right now since the only post-season memories are of a broom and the Rangers wiping the ice with the inexperienced Thrashers.

Perhaps this Winnipeg club will be able to find its way soon enough in the playoffs and make some strides to try and get the Jets that elusive playoff win.

Winnipeg Jets Venue Information

When the Thrashers were doing their business in Atlanta, it was the glorious Phillips Arena that provided the settings for the town's hockey faithful. And then once the move was made to Winnipeg, the Jets had their new home of the MTS Centre to deal with.

Over 15,000 rowdy Canadian hockey fans can take in a Jets game these days, only adding to the crazy ice atmosphere that already overtakes the entire country on a daily basis.

Lots of cool music events have graced the MTS Centre throughout the years, and it's also hosted events like volleyball competitions and even curling challenges.

But of course, if there's a hockey team in the building in Canada, it's fairly clear that a team like the Jets will be considered the top dog in the city and arena.

Winnipeg Jets 2014-2015 Season Recap

Winnipeg just had to find a way to make the playoffs. They just had to. After so many frustrating years of being unable to experience playoff hockey – aside from the one four-game set against the Rangers way back when – fans of this franchise wanted more.

Well, they got more in that Winnipeg found a way to cruise into the post-season for only the second time in the organization's history. However, unfortunately for those Winnipeg supporters, the results happened to be the same as the first time around.

That's right, the brooms were in view once again for this franchise as the Jets could not manage to topple the Anaheim Ducks a single time during the set. This particular playoff series was at least more competitive than the first go around during the Thrashers days, but triumphant victories are much more important than being competitive these days.

While these dedicated Winnipeg hockey fans are hoping that their team can make some Stanley Cup noise in the near future, recent history shows that the Jets may have a much higher hill to climb in order to finally get the playoff monkey off their backs going forward.
