YG Bio

Rapper YG is one of rap’s most exciting rising artists. Since the success of his first album, My Krazy Life (2014), YG’s stock has been rising in the hip-hop community. The Compton-born rapper is known for his catchy songs as well as his authentic rap lifestyle, which hearkens back to the heyday of gangsta rap. Critics and fans alike are following YG closely, and YG tickets are quickly becoming some of the hottest tickets in the hip-hop world.

YG is only in his mid-20s, but he’s put in plenty of work to earn his current success. YG worked his way up from relative obscurity in Compton, earning his shot with a record label. Since then, he’s weathered studio delays and even taken bullets for his work.

YG was born Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson on March 9, 1990. He was born in Compton, California. Compton was a fitting birthplace for a future rap star: the Southern California town has a history of producing great hip-hop artists like Dr. Dre. YG was destined to continue Compton’s strong hip-hop tradition.

Jackson started rapping at a young age, which was no surprise for a kid in Compton – hip-hop is just in the air in that town. He adopted the name “Young Gangsta,” which he later shortened to just YG. YG quickly became determined to turn his hip-hop talents into a serious career. To that end, he began to focus on his online presence. Long before there were YG tickets and YG studio albums, there were YG YouTube videos and SoundCloud tracks. The rapper’s savvy use of social media helped generate hype for his work long before he was noticed by major labels.

Songs like “She a Model" and "Aim Me" took off on the Internet. Fans, not major labels, decided that YG deserved to be a star. By the late 2000s, YG was already well known to tuned-in hip-hop heads around the country. Reading the writing on the wall, the hip-hop label Def Jam moved quickly to sign the young star. In 2009, YG signed his first major-label deal. He was still a teenager at the time.

Over the next several years, YG honed his craft and released a series of popular mixtapes. YG’s mixtapes The Real 4Fingaz (2010) and Just Re'd Up (2011) both performed well critically and commercially, and each produced a charting single.

From the start, YG’s appeal was tied up in his authenticity as well as his talent. During the shooting of a music video for the rapper’s track "I'm a Thug,” someone began firing a gun. Police arrived quickly, and the entire film set was shut down for a time. It would not be the last time that a firearms incident involving YG would draw a police response.

YG first announced his debut album in 2012, though it would be two years before the record was actually released. The album, YG said, would be produced by fellow rapper Syla$ and would be released through the record label CTE World. After some time, YG updated fans with a new announcement, promising that he and Def Jam/CTE World would get the album out in 2013. Young Jeezy, it was revealed, would be taking over production duties. But the 2013 passed just as 2012 did, and YG still didn’t have his first album. He kept recording and the album finally came out in 2014, two years after it was originally announced.

Fans and critics agreed that YG’s debut album was worth the wait. My Krazy Life (2014) met with universal critical acclaim. Critics loved the sunny sounds, ambitious lyrics and production, and undeniable LA vibe of the record. Fans loved it, too, and the record climbed all the way to number two on the Billboard 200 albums charts. The album’s lead single was also a critical success. The track, which featured YG’s fellow rappers Jeezy and Rich Homie Quan, reached number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went double platinum. It had taken two years for YG to finish recording and release his album, but he’d earned a hit debut. New fans around the country rushed to get their hands on YG tickets.

YG’s sudden success didn’t stifle his creativity. In fact, his next project was remarkably unique. YG’s next release was a short film called Blame It on the Streets. Blame It on the Streets was co-written by YG and told the story of his life in Compton before his rise to fame. YG released the film along with a full soundtrack album, also called Blame It on the Streets. Like My Krazy Life, the soundtrack album Blame It on the Streets (2014) earned praise from around the hip-hop world.

And YG’s street life was no act. If anything, the presentation of Blame It on the Streets downplayed YG’s authenticity – Blame It on the Streets purported to show YG’s life before his rise to fame, but it would soon become clear that YG’s past had followed him to stardom. YG was recording in Studio City, California at 1:45 AM on June 12, 2015 when an unknown assailant shot him 10 times in the hip. Police questioned YG about the incident, but he was uncooperative and refused to offer any real help to authorities hoping to find the perpetrator. Luckily for YG and his fans, the rapper’s injuries were not life threatening. Incredibly, he returned to the studio the very next day after the scary incident.

Today, YG is one of rap’s most promising young talents. His studio album and film soundtrack releases have both been critical and commercial successes, but YG’s best work may still lie ahead of him. The Compton rapper brings true street authenticity to the changing rap world, and his ambitious production and unmistakable rap style help him stand out in a crowded field of young rappers. Fans and critics alike praise YG’s music, and YG tickets and YG albums are among the hip-hop genre’s hottest sellers. YG is a rapper at the top of his game, and he’s quickly rising to the top of the music world, too.
