Zedd Details

Zedd Bio

The Russian-born and German-raised musician Zedd rose to fame as an electro-house producer, but his work has never been limited to any single genre. Zedd’s eclectic style shows the influences of a wide range of genres, from classical music to heavy metal, and incorporates all his varied influences into a recognizable and appealing style of electronic music. Zedd’s diverse influences come as no surprise to longtime fans: as fans who have been lining up for Zedd tickets for years well know, Zedd’s current electronic music career is built on a foundation of diverse experiences as a musician. Zedd has a musical heritage, was classically trained, and even played in a deathcore band. And Zedd has accomplished a lot in music in a very short time: he rose to fame as an electro-house producer before he reached his mid-20s. Today, Zedd is one of music’s most restless innovators. His house and electro-house tracks run the musical gamut, giving fans something new each time they look.

Zedd has sometimes made his rise and subsequent career look effortless, but the reality is that Zedd’s rise to fame was anything but inevitable. Zedd owes his popularity to his talent and to his work ethic – as well as to a remarkable journey that took him from the former Soviet Union to the DJ booths of Germany and then to stages at huge venues all around the world.

Zedd’s journey began in the Soviet Union. He was born Anton Zaslavski in Saratov, a city near Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), in the southwestern part of the USSR. Zaslavski was born in either 1989 or 1990 – records aren’t clear as to which it was. From the start, Zaslavski seemed destined to love music: the boy that would someday become Zedd was born to two musicians. Zaslavski’s father was a schoolteacher who also played guitar, and his mother actually made her living in music by teaching the piano.

The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, and Zaslavski’s family left shortly thereafter. They emigrated to Germany when Zaslavski was just three years old, and Zaslavski grew up in Kaiserslautern, a city in southwest Germany. It wasn’t long before the young Zaslavski began to take an interest in music. His music-loving parents helped him along: Zaslavski’s mother began teaching him how to play the piano when he was just four years old. Zedd is a classically trained musician, which is a huge advantage in the music composition and production world. By the time Zaslavski was 12 years old, he’d picked up a second instrument: the drums. Later, his rhythmic skills would help him develop catchy house and dubstep beats. But first, Zaslavski would be drawn to an entirely different genre of music.

Zaslavski began his music career in 2002, but when he was just a teenager. But the days of Zedd tickets, concerts, and albums were still far away: Zaslavski chose to make deathcore music with the band Dioramic. His early 2000s musical style was far cry from the house music he’d later create.

Dioramic was fairly successful as a band, and they earned a record deal with Lifeforce Records. But after hearing the album † (“cross”) by the French electronic music duo Justice, Zaslavski found himself drawn to the house music scene instead of the deathcore scene. In 2009, Zaslavski sat down and tried his hand at making some electronic music of his own. Right away, it was clear that he had a knack for it.

Zaslavski adopted a new stage name to go with his electronic work: Zedd. His first original release was "The Anthem,” which got a fair amount of attention in electronic music circles. Soon, Zedd was winning contests and getting some buzz. He remixed several popular albums (including fellow electronic producer Skrillex’s Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites), a strategy that drew in more new fans.

The hype built until major labels began to take notice. Zedd signed to Interscope records in 2012, just a few years after he’d begun to make electronic music. His first single, "Spectrum,” shot to the top of Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Zedd got mainstream attention, too, thanks to his work on tracks for pop stars like Justin Bieber.

Zedd released his first album in 2012, the same year that he’d signed to Interscope. That album, Clarity, was a critical and commercial success. It sold more than 200,000 copies in the United States, far from Zedd’s hometown in southwest Germany. Clarity’s success was fueled in part by the success of the title track, which served as the album’s first single. “Clarity,” which featured British singer Foxes, cracked the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and gave Zedd his first big crossover hit.

After the success of his debut album, Zedd embarked on his Moment of Clarity World Tour. For the first time, fans all around the world had the chance to buy Zedd tickets and take part in Zedd’s energetic live stage show.

By the mid 2010s, Zedd was an electronic music superstar. His work in electro-house, dubstep, and other related genres had gained him the respect of the electronic music community, and his production work and collaborations had brought him mainstream pop success. He produced two tracks for Lady Gaga’s album Artpop (2013) and was featured on Ariana Grande’s top-10 hit “Break Free” (2014). Zedd, exhausted from his quick rise to the top, took a six-month break before returning with original music of his own in 2015. Like its predecessor, Zedd’s sophomore effort True Colors (2015) was a critical and commercial success. Zedd embarked on his second tour shortly thereafter, giving fans in North America, Europe, and Asia more chances to get their hands on Zedd tickets.

Today, Zedd is one of the electronic music scene’s most important producers. Thanks to his classical training and background in other musical genres, Zedd’s electronic music doesn’t sound like that of other producers. It’s diverse and ever-changing, giving fans tastes of all different musical styles. That approach has made Zedd a star, and it’s earned him an army of fans both in the electronic music community and in the musical world at large.
